What does the Bible say about Giving?
What does the Bible say about Giving? We should pray for God’s guidance and wisdom in all our dealings with money and in all decisions about our giving.
The following Scriptures may serve as guides to our praying:
God owns everything. We are His managers.
The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.
The land is mine and you are but aliens and my tenants.
Remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth.
1 Corinthians 4:2
Now, a person who is put in charge as a manager must be faithful.
Be careful - greed is dangerous!
Then he said to them, ‘Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed;
a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.’
1 Timothy 17-19
Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.”
Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. But you ask, “How do we rob you?” In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—the whole nation of you—because you are robbing me.
1 Tim 6:10
For the love of money is the root of all evil.
Jesus looked at him and loved him. ‘One thing you lack,’ he said. ‘Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’ ”
1 Timothy 6:6-7
But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.
Obedience to God’s guidelines for giving opens channels of blessing:
Honour the LORD with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe, ” says the LORD Almighty.
It is not only about the act of giving, but also about attitude:
2 Corinthians 9:7
God loves a cheerful giver.
